Overall it is still the same great game with a very immersive atmosphere and a wonderful sense of explorational wonder. The basic premise of the story is that you were on a spaceship, with an emphasis on were. It was developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, and was officially released on Januafter over 3 years spent in Early Access on Steam. While essentially the same game the Steam VR version was slightly more glitchy, but like I said that could be my view of it. Subnautica is an open world underwater survival action-adventure game. While it might differ to each person who downloads it I have to say I found the Oculus Rift version a little better.

But it totally works sticking with it until these dives can happen because the things you find in the deep parts of this game will blow your mind. You start with basic rations and very basic tools meaning you need to work your way to up to the point where the deeper dives will take place and the more interesting creatures can be found.

Review: Subnautica is an ever-changing, ever-growing survival adventure game that gets you to build you own underwater world in a sea/ocean that is full of incredibly well-designed flora, fauna and sea creatures, it seems to have everything interesting to look at and at many times make you forget the survival aspects of the game.īut it is that survival element of the game that makes it so tough. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items. Craft diving gear, lights, habitat modules, and submersibles. Collect resources from the ocean around you. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful.Īfter crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. Subnautica’s oceans range from sun-drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. A massive, open-world full of wonder and peril awaits you! You have crash-landed on an alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Prototype 1 is only 40mb just to give yea an idea of what little is there. The builds are more of a proof of concept kinda barebones compared to what we have today.

With substantially improved mod support for virtual reality recently released for Subnautica: Below Zero, now is the best time to dive into the series, here are some tips for playing Subnautica in VR.System: Valve Index, HTC Vive & Oculus Riftĭescription: Subnautica is an underwater adventure game set on an alien ocean planet. Subnautica Prototype 8 on Windows, DRM-Free. There’s nothing more isolating than floating below the waves in VR in Subnautica with nothing around or below you but silted seawater, glancing huge shadowy shapes silently gliding all around. It was fun to visit for an hour, but I wouldnt want to play a proper game in it. At the time, there were considerable performance issues (stuttering) and graphical glitches that made it a less than ideal experience. Weight: 1.79 pounds Valve's Index headset is the latest and greatest in PC-based VR that will fill each of your eyeballs with 1,440 x 1,600 pixels at a refresh rate of 120Hz. Previously I tried playing Subnautica in VR (via Revive) a month or so ago. Despite the developers being a little all over the place with its implementation, once you get it up and running it can be a blast swimming around. Refresh rate: 120Hz (144Hz experimental mode) Field of view: 130-degrees. Of course, it didn’t take long for VR support to be added.
The developers Unknown Worlds broke ground somewhat with their take on the genre by giving you an entire alien ocean to explore with the creature variety and detail in some of the submerged areas, particularly in Below Zero, being genuinely impressive.

Updated February 17th, 2022 by Matthew Mckeown: The Subnautica series is more than just a trial by fire for those with Thalassophobia, it’s also a challenging open-world underwater survival game. So if you feel like taking your deep-sea diving to the next level, then here are some tips to keep in mind when using VR. Although the VR version is a little rough around the edges, it's still a great addition to the game. The extra immersion added with a VR headset is incredible and downright terrifying at times, especially if you're exploring one of the Subnautica's scary and dangerous biomes.

Taking the plunge beneath these alien tides in VR though is a completely different ball game. RELATED: Subnautica: Everything You Need To Know About The Gargantuan Leviathan Mod
