Something like a Melekko JAG is very helpful in making simple CVs into the multiple CVs needed for panning thing around. They give you 4 inputs that can be panned around to any of the four outputs for location modulation. I have two 4ms VCAMatrix in my rig and those are great for this sort of thing. I can hook the inputs of the DAW rig into my modular and feed it signals but it is not a dedicated setup.īasically if live quadraphonic is what you are aiming for, it is easier to think dual stereo and do all the panning and location modulation in the modular. I have one nice stereo rig for the computer/DAW on one side of the room and a separate stereo rig for my modular on the other side. I have that in my studio now but they are no way matching or balanced. They were all rented for the gig and were basically 2 stereo systems wired as a hybrid. I have never owned the systems I have used. Of course what I really want is full 3D sound, but that's a separate source of madness. Then I can record main and sub bus outputs into a multitrack recorder, and as necessary add more mono tracks to then shift around using the recorder's internal facilities, before dumping into something like Audacity for turning into a 4.0 FLAC file (or similar). My current best thinking is to plan on quadraphonic output, by using the sub outs of my main mixer as rear left and right, then feeding them with the aux bus outputs, to which I can send prefader levels.
Sunvox and protools how to#
The question then becomes, in a world of stereo inputs and outputs, how to do it. But now it occurs to me that I could, and arguably should take it more seriously, all the more so because my work tends to the atmospheric and psychedelic. Surround sound was something that I'd always written off, leaving to the sound editor of a movie, and ignoring in favour of stereo for albums. The whole thing did lead me to think about the other facet of this work that has been a thorn in my side: surround sound. This is a bummer because I don't like moving between hardware and computer in terms of workflow, but that's not the topic of the thread. I'm reluctantly concluding that there's probably nothing in hardware that will, for the final polish, beat my studio computer and software.

So, those of you who saw the last thread know that:Ī) I'm considering my recording and mastering optionsī) while I do live and album play, I also do movie production work Ok, making a new topic for this because, well, it's a little different in focus from my last thread.
